The Tour
An inspiring journey through Belfast’s rich history
The heart of Belfast
The Church, State and Rebellion Tour takes you through the heart of Belfast, revealing the city’s deep and complex relationship with religion and politics in a time of exponential growth.
Our tour will reveal a British Anglican ascendancy, a Catholic minority who had little or no say, who were suffering injustice and did not have the power to do anything about that, a group of Presbyterian dissenters, whose faith drove them to rebellion against the British – in a fight not only for their own freedom, but the freedom of their Catholic countrymen, then an emerging group of Presbyterians, who believe that the British Empire, which has become more tolerant of Catholics and non-Anglican Protestants, offers Ireland a peaceful Christian existence.
As we learn about how faith has interacted with the state here, it inspires you to think of your own home places, those cities you have travelled from, how does the Church and the State interact today in the place you call home?
