The Sights

Donegall Square East/City Hall

Designed by Alfred Brumwell Thomas and completed in 1906, this is a magnificent Baroque Revival building symbolising Belfast’s industrial might and civic pride. Together, these buildings reflect the interplay of church and state, reminding visitors of the city’s complex social and political history.

Donegall Square East is home to Belfast City Hall but also the former site of Donegall Square Methodist Church - the “mother church” of Belfast Methodism. It offers a unique glimpse into the city’s rich history. The Methodist church, which stood here from 1806 until its closure in 1994, played a significant role in Belfast’s religious and civic life.
